THE Honda City Turbo II was one of the quickest, most enjoyable machines you could buy when it was launched in 1984 at a low price. We are not giving it any concessions because it’s only a small engine front-wheel drive hatchback. This little hatch had the performance to take on a Mazda 323 Familia Turbo, Ford Laser S Turbo, Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo and Toyota Celica ST.

Let’s take a look at its stats. At around 730kg, the City Turbo II matches the Daihatsu Charade turbo that was released in 1984. The big difference was that the Turbo II had a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine producing 108hp while the Charade had just 68hp! Under its stubby little bonnet, the City Turbo II used an ER-series 1.2-litre transverse alloy four-pot with a SOHC, eight-valve head. The City Turbo also came with multi-point fuel injection featuring Honda’s intriguing CVCC system. The advantages of this system were improved emissions, fuel efficiency and reduced chance of detonation.

With its low static compression ratio, considerable boost pressure and a very long stroke, the City II was tremendously torquey at all revs and its small turbocharger came on instantly and quite smoothly. In some instances, you could hear the turbo ‘boosting’ from barely over 1000rpm. The City Turbo II’s massive mid-range grunt made it a real pleasure to point and go. Unlike the Charade Turbo, there was no need to push the revs. Not surprisingly, peak torque (160Nm) was attained at a relatively low 3000rpm.

The standard three-speed auto allowed for quick sprints of less than 12 seconds and the manual was even quicker. The City Turbo II rides on a strut front and IRS rear with a sway bar bolted to each end; ride, however, is pretty average. The ventilated front discs and callipers are apparently the same as those found on 1984 Honda Preludes, while the rear brakes are stock drums.

Inside, it is surprisingly comfortable, with standard sports seats offering a very liveable combination of firmness and support. Standard features include a manual sunroof with removable trim blind, remote mirrors, a thick-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and a digital dashboard (later models had conventional dial instrumentation).

There’s good head and legroom up front and width is reasonable given the size of car, but rear passenger space is – as you’d expect – fairly limited. The Turbo II got a ‘power bulge’ bonnet, a sports front 'bar and a great looking set of flared wheel arches. These details give the tall and stubby City II a tough look from the front, but the rear-end looks nothing special. Standard wheels were 13x5 alloys wearing 185/60 rubbers: however, most owners would have upgraded them by now, 20 years later.

The first generation City Turbo, retrospectively called City Turbo I, was manufactured between 1981 and 1983. The Turbo II continued the line until it was discontinued in 1987. Interestingly, the City Turbo was produced in limited numbers as a cabriolet, making it very rare and desirable today. From all accounts, it’s easy to get a City Turbo running in the high-14s across the quarter mile; its light weight is a wonderful thing!

Honda City Turbo Racing

Mugen and Honda ran a single make racing series using the city turbos. The cars were based on the production vehicles as were the motors. The motors had larger exhaust, injectors, production type turbo (with 22psi), production type intercooler, and a modified camshaft. These cars did the standing 1/4 mile in 13.5 seconds (which isn’t bad for a frontwheel drive car set up for circuit racing). They ran very fat tyres (9” front and 7” rear). The official mugen figure for power output is 138+hp @ 5500rpm but the torque is around 22kgm @ 3500rpm (standard twin cam VTEC 1600 has 16kgm, NSX V6 has about 28kgm). It takes little work to produce these power figure in a street motor. The cars from the one make racing series were bought by an Australian entrepreneur with the view to continuing the series in Australia. Unfortunately all the vehicles were in a wharehouse in Osaka waiting to be shipped when an earthquake struck and buried the lot
